Joining has always been critical to the development of complex components. Today engineers have a vast array of joining technologies which are not only used for joining but also surface modification of components, rapid prototyping etc.
Critical to all these uses are the development of the materials microstructure which can be highly complex due to, for example, the cooling rates involved, joining of dissimilar materials and the variety of processes used.
The Royal Microscopical Society is considering organising a 'Microscopy: Joining of Engineering Materials' meeting, which will consider the microstructures that are developed during joining operations.
