A meeting is to be held in September 2007 in memory of the late Dr. Geoff Newman. Dr. Newman, a Fellow of the RMS, had a distinguished academic career spanning over 40 years, during which time he invented the use of a new plastic embedding medium called London Resin (technically known as LR-White) for immunomicroscopy. The textbook he wrote with his colleague, Jan Hobot, on the use of novel plastic embedding media became an overnight bestseller. His inventiveness also extended to his favourite subject relating to the use of heavy metal salts, such as silver and gold, as stains and labels in histology and electron microscopy, and led Geoff to develop several novel silver intensification procedures. These could be applied to both colloidal gold and peroxidase immunotechniques. His acutely astute appreciation of the evolving world of microscopy, and his high level contacts in the commercial world, helped him to bring forth pathology modernization-led changes ahead of its time.

To maintain the spirit of scientific enquiry that Geoff passed on to those who met him, distinguished speakers from both academia and commerce have agreed to come and talk in their areas of expertise, to review our current knowledge in microscopy, and to look to the future. Speakers will include Eric Carlemalm, inventor of the Lowicryl low temperature resins; Gareth Griffiths, a pioneer in the field of cell biology and electron microscopy; Iolo ap Gwyn, a leading figure in Scanning Electron Microscopy; representatives from FEI, JEOL and Leica, discussing current and future innovations awaiting microscopists. The conference will provide ample time for participants to meet, talk and discuss the future of microscopy with both the speakers and other attendees.

A poster session is also planned, and young microscopists are encouraged to take part. All forms of microscopy can be presented. A small prize will be awarded to the poster judged to be scientifically the most innovative.
