lm courseThe Light Microscopy summer school is an annual, residential three day course held at the University of York covering the principles of light microscopy. Participants are also trained in practical issues surrounding light microscopy. After introductory presentations, the course is taught predominantly through hands-on practical sessions.

lm courseThe course is suitable for both novices and more experienced users wanting to gain a greater understanding of the microscope and feedback every year is always fantastic (see below). Students come from a range of backgrounds within both research and commercial organisations. All have benefited greatly from the Course and leave with increased understanding and skills.

The course is immediately followed by a two day hands-on Confocal Course - Getting the most from your Confocal and a one day Grain Sizing Course.

About Registration

The registration fee includes:

  • 3 nights en-suite accommodation (Sunday to Wednesday inclusive) on the pleasant University of York campus;
  • All meals, including a welcome dinner on Sunday evening, the course dinner on the Tuesday evening at a restaurant in York, and lunch and daytime refreshments.

The LM Summer School has previously been awarded 19 CPD points from the IBMS.

About the course
The course is conducted in English and all course materials are prepared in English.
The course will have a maximum of 24 delegates and you can select to attend the physical sciences or biological sciences aspects.

Venue and Travel
The course will be taking place in the Department of Biology at the University of York, Heslington Campus, Wentworth Way, York. The Department of Biology is situated on Wentworth Way.

If you are flying to the UK, we recommend that you travel to Manchester International airport and then travel by train, it is more covenient that Leeds airport.
If travelling by train, it is easiest to get a taxi directly to campus, this should cost no more than £10.
If you are driving, please make your way to the pay and display car park F. Parking permits can be purchased at registration for £3 per day (Sunday parking is free but you must have a permit in place by 8am Monday morning).

Registration, Accommodation and Meals
Registration will be taking place on Sunday 8th July from 17.00 – 18.00 at the Department of Biology main reception.
At registration you will receive the following:
a name badge, a course pack including programme, notes and delegate list, and a pack of RMS information.
You will be requested to wear your badge at all times during the course.

Immediately after registration we will make our way into York to a local restaurant for a welcome dinner, followed by a special tour around York. Depending on the weather you may need to bring a jumper or a jacket.

Accommodation
You have 3 nights’ accommodation at the University in Vanbrugh College, beginning on Sunday 8th and checking out on Wednesday 11th (unless otherwise arranged with the office).
The rooms are very basic, en-suite and student style. Bed linen and towels are provided. The rooms do not have televisions but do have radios.
Rooms have telephones but arrangements must be made through the porters for use.

Meals
Breakfast on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is included and will be served in the Vanbrugh College Dining Hall, which is next to the College Reception at Vanbrugh College. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday it will be served from 08.00 – 09.00.
Buffett lunches will be provided in the Department of Biology each day, as will tea and coffee. There are also vending machines if you wish to buy canned drinks or snacks.

Evening meals
Sunday evening: Dinner at 18.30 at Ask in York city centre. This will be followed by a tour around the city.
Monday evening: Dinner in Vanbrugh College dining room from 18.30 – 20.00.
Tuesday evening: Dinner at Jade Garden, a restaurant in York at 19.00.

Additional Information

  • Delegates travelling from overseas will need electricty travel adaptors for the UK.
  • Internet access passwords can be obtained at registration and are free. You can use them anywhere on York campus, wifi is available in the department but you will require an ethernet cable in your bedroom. These will be in your room on arrival.
  • Dress code for the course is smart casual, you will be indoor for the duration of the course and the building is air conditioned. There are evening social activities planned and delegates are reminded to bring comfortable shoes for the tour of York city centre and provision in case of inclement weather.
  • Every care will be taken to cater for any special dietary requirements. Delegates must make the RMS aware of these requirements prior to attending, please contact sarah@rms.org.uk.
  • York University has a small supermarket and ATM on campus.

After the course
We will send out an email questionnaire after the course. We would be most grateful if you could fill this in within a week of returning so that we can use your comments to improve the running of the course for the following year.
