Why I'm a member...

Hannah Lomax-Browne joined the Society in 2006 just before she started her PhD. Find out why she is still a member and why she encourages her colleagues to join...

hannah lomax-browne"I first became aware of the RMS when I attended the Cell Imaging Techniques Course before I started my PhD in breast cancer research at Oxford Brookes University. I was so impressed with the course that I signed up for membership and have never looked back.

I have had the opportunity to attend MICROSCIENCE three times so far during my membership, taking advantage of the discounted member registration fee. I have also been lucky enough to receive a travel bursary to present my research at an international meeting.

Thanks to the RMS, opportunities like this have introduced me to so many other like-minded people, within and outside of my own field, who have extensive experience in microscopy and imaging. Many of them are leading names in their research field and like all members of the society they are willing to pass on their knowledge. I have found this incredibly useful, especially being in the early stages of my career, where it is crucial to network.

Now that I am in my first post-doc at University College London, also in the area of breast cancer research, I am still renewing my membership every year and I am encouraging all my colleagues to sign up. As we image breast cancer samples on a regular basis, microscopy is key to our research. I know that membership of the RMS will be as great for them as it has been for me."
