Annual membership of the Society runs from January to December. Fellows and Ordinary Members who are not in paid employment, e.g. retired or studying, qualify for a concession on their membership.
Since 2007, new Members are required to maintain Ordinary Membership for a continuous period of three years before being invited to become a Fellow of the RMS.
This restriction applies to current members who allow their membership to lapse.
Fellows of the Society are permitted by the By-laws of the Society to display the post-nominals, FRMS.

Members who pay their subscription by direct debit are entitled to a discount of 5% on basic membership rates.

The Direct Debit Guarantee
• This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits. • If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit the Royal Microscopical Society will notify you 14 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request the Royal Microscopical Society to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request. • If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit by the Royal Microscopical Society or your bank or building society you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society. - If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when the Royal Microscopical Society asks you to. • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society.
