2009 Awards

Applications to the 2009 Vice President's Fund were awarded to two exciting projects.

The Fund supports projects that encourage young people to use microscopes and bring microscopy to a wider audience. This year there were nine applications and they covered a wide spectrum of initiatives.

"Our decision this year was made very difficult by the quality and diversity of the applications," says Professor Chris Hawes, one of the Society's Vice Presidents. "The two projects that we chose capture the spirit of the Fund quite perfectly and, in turn, they will further the objectives of the Society by bringing microscopy to a wider audience. I would like to congratulate them on their success, and I will be following their progress with great interest."

The two projects are -

Practical Microscopy for Gambian Schools – to introduce practical microscopy to as many Gambian Schools as possible by providing workshops and equipment. Lead applicant: Pippa Howard.

Curious: The Craft of Microscopy- by mixing science, technology and art, this exhibition aims to improve public understanding of the history of microscopy, as well as its role in modern society. Lead applicant: Simon Chaplin.
