emc2012 Sixth Form Competition

Win a hands on science session for your class at The Learning Zone at emc2012!

Will you have science students in year 12 or 13 in September 2012?

Would you like your students to have the opportunity to visit the European Microscopy Congress in Manchester in September 2012?

We are offering 2 schools the opportunity to win a ‘hands on’ science session at emc2012 where you can spend time seeing and using advanced light microscopes, Confocal Laser Scanning microscopes and Electron Microscopes with experts in the field. Your students will have the chance to meet people with careers in microscopy from sales and marketing to technicians, scientists, engineers and academics. We are also offering help with transport costs. You will also be able to visit the emc2012 exhibition showcasing the newest and most advanced microscopes in the world.

What you need to do: Students must develop a plan of how to address a pressing scientific problem (e.g. medical, environmental, there are no limits!) using any microscope –already in existence or of their own invention. This can be produced in any form as long as it can be uploaded electronically to the link on our website.

Closing date Friday 23rd March 2012

The winners will be notified in April 2012 and the visit will take place on Friday 21st September 2012 from 10am-2pm.

The visit will consist of a 2 hour programme of activities with the experts and microscopes and 2 hours to visit the exhibition. The RMS will contribute towards the transport costs of the winning schools (subject to distance travelling). The specific programme of activities will be sent to the competition winners in advance. All submissions must be made by the teacher who will be the correspondant.
