In 2014, under the auspices of the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS), the Electron Microscopy and Analysis Group (EMAG) of the Institute of Physics and the then sole National Electron Microscopy Facility (SuperSTEM), a working group on the provision of Electron Microscopy in the Physical and Engineering Sciences (EMPESWG) published a report following various Town Hall meetings. Further information on the working group and the report is available at https://www.rms.org.uk/community/networks-affiliates/advanced-electron-microscopy-working-group.html

Since 2014 there have been a number of developments including the continued renewal of the SuperSTEM facility, the development of new National Electron Microscopy Facilities at Diamond/Harwell (ePSIC is associated with the Physical Sciences) as well as significant investment in a variety of new institutional capabilities. Hence it would appear timely to refresh the Roadmap for Electron Microscopy in the Physical and Engineering Sciences and to determine a future strategy for both infrastructure investment and user access. This initial Town Hall Launch meeting aims to outline the proposed process and to seek initial feedback from attendees.
