‘Don’t ask why – ask how!’
Sign up for special symposium in tribute to the late Professor Chris Hawes
An event to honour the life and work of former RMS President, the late Professor Chris Hawes, is taking place in Oxford on 8 November.
The symposium, titled ‘Don’t ask why – ask how!’, will also be an opportunity for friends and colleagues to share memories of Chris, who was a highly respected scientist and much-loved character across the microscopical community.
Chris was a Professor of Plant Cell Biology and Research Lead at Oxford Brookes University, and became a major figure in the RMS after joining the Society in 1980. He held a number of senior roles including a term as President from 2004 to 2006. Most recently he served as Executive Honorary Secretary; a nine-year term which came to an end only the day before his death on 4 July. Chris also played a major role as a Scientific Editor of the Journal of Microscopy from 2000 to 2018.
