Invited Speaker - Harry Allan - Revealing the 3D architecture of human lung tissue using multi-scale X-ray phase-contrast tomography at the UCL NXCT facility

Invited Speaker

Diseases such as emphysema, fibrosis, and lung cancer alter the structure of the lung, impairing its function. Changes to anatomical features such as the vasculature and airways can indicate the presence and progression of disease, yet conventional histology is typically limited to two-dimensional sections and cannot fully capture their three-dimensional organisation. X-ray tomography overcomes this limitation by enabling non-destructive, high-resolution 3D imaging of intact tissue.

This talk will present recent developments of the NXCT multi-contrast X-ray micro-CT system and its application to imaging resected human lung tissue. The reconstructed volumes reveal the three-dimensional architecture of the lung parenchyma and a range of tumour subtypes across multiple spatial scales, from whole tissue structure to the cellular level. Finally, automatic vasculature and airway segmentation enables a move from qualitative to quantitative evaluation of the specimens.
