The Royal Microscopical Society operates annual bursary funds that support its members to attend conferences, workshops and outreach events both at home and overseas. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on travel and events, we have adjusted our bursary schemes temporarily to better suit the current circumstances and requirements of our members.
We are currently offering:
The same eligibility criteria applies as with a standard travel bursary, however the application is made to help towards the costs of registration fees to attend virtual conferences where you are presenting, rather than the costs of travelling to them. We are aware that our members may have had restrictions placed on paying to attend online events by their workplaces or institutions and this bursary is designed to allow them to still participate in events they would normally have attended.
If you are an early career researcher normally within 12 years of starting your PhD or are employed in a support role in microscopy or cytometry then these are for you.
If you have been a member of the Royal Microscopical Society for more than twelve months at the time of application and have been accepted to present a paper involving microscopy at a conference or workshop - either orally or as a poster - then you are eligible.
Bursary applications are considered by the Executive Honorary Secretary and the Honorary Treasurer. When there is a heavy demand preference will be given to those with one or more years of continuous membership. On occasions we also offer bursaries for specific events which will be publicised separately.
- A member can apply for up to £100 for a virtual registration fee.
- It is anticipated that where these sums are insufficient to cover the full registration fee of attending a virtual event, they will be used as ‘leverage’ for additional support from elsewhere.
- After the conference the member will prepare a short report for publication in infocus Magazine.
COVID-19 Update – You can still apply for these bursaries if you are running a virtual outreach event.
It is recognised that many RMS Members are engaged in outreach activities where some external funding would help with those little extras, such as consumables, refreshments etc. Council has set aside a special bursary fund for this specific purpose of up to £100 per application.
If you have been a member of the Royal Microscopical Society for more than one year at the time of application, you are eligible to apply for support from this fund.
Applications are considered by the Executive Honorary Secretary and the Honorary Secretary Education. Payment will be made after the event, on completing an RMS Expense Form and producing the relevant receipts and report, the deadline for this being 30 days after the date of the event.Download the RMS Public Engagement and Outreach Bursary Terms and Conditions
RMS-MSA Microscopy & Microanalysis Meeting Award
COVID-19 Update - This scheme is temporarily on hold until 2022.
The RMS, in collaboration with the Microscopy Society of America (MSA), have an award to encourage our young RMS members (students and post-doctoral research associates) to participate in the annual Microscopy & Microanalysis conferences.
The purpose of this RMS-sponsored Award is to defray the costs of participating in the Microscopy & Microanalysis Congress. Two (2) £750 awards provided by the RMS, along with complementary M&M Registration (courtesy of the MSA) will be presented to the first authors of the extended abstracts selected for presentation.
