Bioimaging UK Hardware Infrastructure Community Workshop & White Paper

On Weds 8 Nov 13.00-16.30 we met online to discuss future bioimaging infrastructure plans and investment

Following the 2020 community white paper, establishment of the UK Euro-BioImaging Node and community bioimaging initiatives such as volumeEM, the time is right to propose a national plan. The output of this workshop is a short white paper on national bioimaging infrastructure:

Overview of current situation

1320: Part 1 Breakout groups:

  • Should we expand UK EuBI Node?
  • What are the barriers to offering access?
  • Should we prioritise specific technology gaps where we have most demand?
  • Can we/should we include biomedical imaging – if so, do we have capacity and what key tech should we focus on?
  • Should we develop a single or multiple dedicated UK data analysis nodes? If so, what would these look like?
  • What would core funding for facility/Node access look like and how should it be administered?

  • Do we need a dedicated infrastructure fund to run alongside access fund to support cutting edge tech dev?
  • What are the key emerging opportunities for imaging tech dev? Who are the users for this and what are the current barriers?
  • How much funding do we need, over what time frame and should any funding be administered? Should we make any funding contingent on eventual open access/integration into UK Node? Should data/analysis be including in this?
