To take into consideration the propriety of forming a society for the promotion of microscopical investigation and improvement of the microscope as a scientific instrument.

This was the subject for discussion amongst the seventeen microscopists who met at Edwin Quekett’s house No 50 Wellclose Square, in the Borough of Stepney, East London on 3^rd September 1839. It was resolved that such a society be formed and a provisional committee be appointed to carry this resolution into effect.
