"In April 1962 I was recommended to become a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. The Fellowship was competitive in those days; candidates needed support from signatories who had to attest that they recommended your work. The microscopist Parry Morton, a kindly, sharp-eyed and distinguished man, kept some of my slides for study, many of them made when I was still a schoolboy. At the time I was studying trypanosome infections of fish, and he found many of my preparations fascinating."
