infocus #30 June 2013 A Virtual Microscope through Time
Progress Report from the Open University's Virtual Microscope Project, one of the Winners of the 2011 RMS Vice-Presidents Award
This project provides the public with access to a virtual microscope which incorporates quality images from optical and electron microscopes. This content is brought together in a website with the theme of objects representing different points in time. Samples include material that pre-dates the solar system through to modern technology currently used in space exploration. The content gives a flavour of microscopy and its applications in scientific research of rare and important materials and communicates aspects of the physical sciences in an interactive and meaningful form.
