infocus #64 December 2021 Multiwavelength epi-illumination fluorescence microscopy. A review.

Professor Johan Sebastiaan Ploem is an RMS Honorary Fellow and served as President of the Society from 1986 - 87. Among his many achievements during a celebrated career, he is perhaps best known for his work on epi-illumination fluorescence microscopy. In this contribution for infocus, he reflects on some of the key impacts and applications stemming from the development of this technique.

In the present publication a comprehensive, and detailed review, about the development of epiillumination fluorescence microscopy, is written for the first time. An important technical development was realised in a collaboration between a laboratory at a university, and several industrial optical companies.

Professor Emeritus, Leiden University

Professor Ploem is a graduate of Utrecht University, the Netherlands, receiving an MD in 1972. He worked as Intern in the Broussais Hospital (Paris, France) with Professor Pasteur Valery-Radot. In 1963, Dr. Ploem was elected a Fulbright Fellow for Study at the Harvard University School of Public Health, receiving a Master of Public Health degree Cum Laude in 1954. He obtained a PhD degree in 1967 from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Professor Ploem has served as visiting lecturer or professor at various universities: Dundee, Scotland; University of Florida, USA; Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; University of Beijing (Academia Sinica), China; and at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium
