Open call for applications for Deputy Editor – Journal of Microscopy
The Journal of Microscopy (JoM) is seeking applications for the position of Deputy Editor (Materials/Physical Sciences) to join the Editorial Board.
The JoM is for scientists and technologists that use any form of microscopy, spatially resolved spectroscopy, compositional mapping, microanalysis and image analysis. This includes technology and applications in physics, chemistry, material and biological sciences. The Journal of Microscopy is particularly interested in papers on original applications and developments in microscopy.
As the Deputy Editor, your role would include supporting the General Editor in duties and tasks, such as attending Royal Microscopical Society science section meetings to promote the Journal and request ideas for special issues and review papers. We would both seek and accept your advice on current trends and new aspects of all forms of microscopy that would be suitable topics for publication in the Journal. In addition, we would ask you to help us with the Journal’s rigorous refereeing procedure. We would also ask you to submit to the Journal whenever appropriate, and to encourage your colleagues to do so.
Specific tasks and responsibilities are likely to include some of the following:
• Support the General Editor with necessary tasks, including attending RMS science section meetings and in interactions with the publisher
• Working with the General Editor in developing and maintaining a journal strategy at a time of change in scientific publishing
• Recruit suitable referees for papers, and act as a reviewer when appropriate
• Solicit and encourage submission of papers
• Read and cite papers from the journal and encourage readership, especially within own institution
• Advise on best conferences for marketing the journal
• Submit own papers to the journal
• Represent and promote journal at conferences
• Advise on developments amongst other journals
• Attend editorial meetings, which are held up to 3 times a year (two of which will be virtual)
Experience
We expect applicants to be well-established in their field, and to be using microscopy-based approaches as a key tool in their research work. All applicants would additionally be expected to be experienced in acting as an editor/member of an editorial board for a reputable journal. It is desirable that applicants would have already published their research findings in the Journal of Microscopy in the recent past and/or already have connections with the Royal Microscopical Society.
