Establishing and Providing Light Microscopy Core Facility Services
This two-day course is designed to help people who plan to work in or to run a light microscopy facility. The course will be beneficial to those who intend to improve some aspects of their existing services as well as those who are moving into a new facility managers role. This course will cover a wide range of important issues required for establishing and providing light microscopy services in core facilities.
The course is presented by seven experienced facility managers, and will cover a wide range of practical issues required for establishing and providing light microscopy services in core facilities.

Dr Kurt Anderson
The Francis Crick Institute
Kurt is a cell biologist who uses advanced imaging methods to study cell migration. He completed his PhD at the University of Salzburg in 1997 on the actin-based mechanism of fish keratocyte migration. He then spent 2 years as a post-doc at the Marie Curie Cancer Research Institute (UK) before moving to Dresden in 2001 to set up the light microscopy facility at the new MPI-CBG. In 2005 he moved to the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, where he runs the Beatson Advanced Imaging Resource (BAIR) and a research group investigating tumor cell migration. His work at the Beatson used imaging methods such as FRAP and FRET to study the molecular dynamics of cell adhesion and migration in vitro and in vivo. In 2016 Kurt moved to the Francis Crick Institute, where he is now Head of the Crick Advanced Light Microscopy Facility (CALM) -

Dr Philippe Laissue
University of Essex
Philippe is a lecturer in bioimaging at the University of Essex. He has developed imaging approaches and instrumentation for quantified microscopy in diverse research areas, from neuroanatomy and cytoskeletal dynamics to models of human diseases and photobiology of photosynthetic organisms. His current focus is on minimally invasive live imaging for marine and biomedical applications. He is a highly experienced teacher and instructor, having set up or contributed to numerous international conferences and world-class courses. After a PhD at the University of Basel in Switzerland, he did a Post-Doc at the University of Kent, then directed the bioimaging unit at the University of Essex. As Royal Society Industry Fellow from 2015-2018, he developed light-sheet illumination with Cairn Research. He has twice been recipient of a Whitman fellowship at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, USA, working on coral imaging; this also led to the first prize in the Nikon Small World in Motion competition in 2019. As an academic, he now enjoys teaching cell biology and bioimaging, leading his own research group and working with many amazing collaborators and co-organisers.

Peter heads the Imaging and Cytometry Labs within the Technology Facility at the University of York which includes an array of confocal microscopes, flow cytometers and electron microscopes. Peter gained his PhD in the Cell Biophysics Laboratory at the University of Essex and has been involved in many aspects of fluorescence imaging. Research is currently focused on both technology and method development of novel probes and imaging modalities.Peter has ongoing collaborations with many leading microscopy and cytometry companies and his group also provides research support to many academics and commercial organisations. Peter is also heavily involved with teaching microscopy and flow cytometry which includes organising and teaching on both the RMS Light Microscopy Summer School and the RMS Practical Flow Cytometry courses.

Dr Stefanie Reichelt

Stefanie Reichelt, PhD is head of the light microscopy facility at the CRUK Cambridge Institute. The core provides state-of-the-art imaging resources, training courses for scientists and students and develop new imaging systems as well as user-friendly analysis and acquisition tools for specific research applications. Stefanie teaches academically at Cambridge University, in scientific workshops and out-reach events. She is also founder of the well-known Plymouth Advanced Microscopy Course and the Centre for Mathematical Imaging in Healthcare (CIMH). -
Dr Alex Sossick

Alex heads the Imaging Facility at the Gurdon Institute, which includes a variety of microscopy techniques including confocal, high throughput and deconvolution. He is keen to raise the level of microscopy understanding and application, and runs and takes part in various microscopy courses.
