New special issue of Journal of Microscopy – Microscopy and Infectious Diseases
The Journal of Microscopy is pleased to announce the publication of a new special issue, Microscopy and Infectious Diseases!
The special issue, guest edited by Leandro Lemgruber (University of Glasgow, UK) and Mariana De Niz (Northwestern University, USA), emphasises the interconnection between microscopy and microbiology, advancing understanding of infectious diseases.
In the introductory article, the Guest Editors say: “The topic of Microscopy and Infectious Diseases has been one of great interest to us as editors, throughout our careers as parasitologists and as imaging scientists. Research on infectious diseases is vast, covering organisms including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. These fascinating microorganisms range from viruses of a few nanometers to parasitic helminths of several meters of length.
“Within this range, microscopy has been pivotal to our understanding of infectious microorganisms including their complex life cycles, cell biology, immune evasion mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions, among others. The fields of microbiology and imaging have historically significantly impacted each other, with pioneering technologies enabling us to understand ever more complex processes, and to ask questions that often require the generation of novel tools.”
