Sponsored Content: JEOL Launches LazEdge Laser-Integrated SEM
JEOL has introduced LazEdge Laser SEM system, a new analytical platform that integrates scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with advanced femtosecond laser technology developed in collaboration with Hamamatsu Photonics. The system is designed to simplify and accelerate cross-section preparation and analysis for a broad range of scientific and industrial applications.
By combining laser processing and SEM observation within a single specimen chamber, LazEdge enables high-speed, large-area cross-sectioning without exposing samples to the external environment. This allows specimens to move directly from preparation to SEM imaging, elemental analysis and crystal orientation analysis, helping to improve workflow efficiency while preserving sample integrity.
A key feature of the system is its proprietary phase-modulation optical technology, which spatially modulates the laser beam to produce smooth, high-quality cross-sections while minimising laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). The result is cleaner cross-sectional surfaces that support reliable downstream analysis and characterisation.
JEOL has also incorporated its LazEdge Shield technology to suppress debris generated during laser processing. The shielding system helps keep detectors, electron-optical components and specimen chamber surfaces clean, supporting consistent analytical performance and reducing the risk of contamination within the instrument.
The integrated design enables rapid switching between laser processing and SEM observation, creating a seamless workflow from sample preparation through to analysis. Laser processing with the LazEdge system can produce cross-sections suitable for electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), while automated repetition of processing and measurement steps supports efficient three-dimensional EBSD workflows.
LazEdge is intended for applications including metallurgical investigations, analysis of air-sensitive battery materials and semiconductor failure analysis.
