The Journal of Microscopy is pleased to announce a new special issue - Imaging and Mechanobiology: novel tools to investigate forces in living systems

Mechanobiology is fundamental to our understanding of how physical forces shape biological systems in both health and disease. As the field continues to evolve, its intersection with tissue engineering and regenerative medicine has sparked a new era of discovery. This resurgence is fuelled by sophisticated imaging and measurement tools that allow us to observe biological mechanics with unprecedented precision.

We invite submissions that showcase the cutting edge of this discipline. We are particularly interested in research leveraging cutting edge techniques including Brillouin microscopy, magnetic/optical tweezers, AFM TIRF, traction force microscopy, mechanosensors, and FLIM. Furthermore, we welcome studies focused on multi-scale correlative mapping and the integration of artificial Intelligence for predictive modelling and multi-modal data analysis.

We encourage researchers to submit original articles, perspectives, and reviews that demonstrate the impact of mechanobiology on our understanding of life and its clinical applications.

Guest Editors:

Constadina Arvanitis (Northwestern University)
Mariana De Niz (Northwestern University)
Peter Dluhy (Northwestern University)

Deadline for submissions: 31 December 2026

Papers should be submitted through Research Exchange platform. Please choose the paper type 'Original Article', ‘Rapid Publication’ or ‘Methods and Procotols’ and choose “Imaging and Mechanobiology” as the special issue.
