My profession as a histopathologist involved inspecting more than a hundred samples of diseased body tissues daily to make a medical diagnosis. Microscopic sections made for this purpose were mounted between the base and cover glass with a classic Canadian balm, or - more often in recent decades - with an acrylate resin. The mounting medium occasionally overflowed to the sides and, after drying, created incredibly shaped reliefs. If an inquisitive microscopist came across them during his work, he discovered a gold mine of aesthetic experiences.
