Hi all, I'm Liisa Hirvonen and I work in sunny Perth at the University of Western Australia. With a background in instrument development, I moved here in 2019 to take up a job that sounded like a post-doc but I ended up managing the Optical Microscopy platform at the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) core facility. We are an open access facility, part of Microscopy Australia, with about 100 users/year from all fields of science. We have some basic and confocal microscopes, a slide scanner, as well as some more advanced platforms (FLIM, super-res, and soon to come a lightsheet microscope).

Brith Bergum 12 Nov 2024 - 07:48:33 AM
Hi,
My name is Brith Bergum, and I serve as the Flow Cytometry Core Facility Manager at the University of Bergen, Norway. I have been dedicated to this role for approximately nine years. Our facility is equipped with both flow and mass cytometry instruments, including a Fortessa, Accuri, SH800, ID7000, Symphony S6, Helios/Hyperion, and a Cytof XT.
The majority of our work involves human biological material; however, we also process samples from marine organisms, sorting live, free-living unicellular eukaryotes and algae. The most rewarding aspect of my position is the opportunity to engage with students and researchers from around the globe and to assist them in advancing their research endeavours at UiB.

Dr Virginia Vila del Sol 11 Nov 2024 - 06:45:14 AM
Hi everyone,
I´m Virginia Vila-del Sol, manager of the Flow Cytometry Facility and Extracellular Vesicles Unit at the National Paraplegics Hospital in Toledo, Spain. We are a little core facility at the research Unit of our Hospital, with 2 analysers and 1 cell sorter. I have been managing the Flow Cytometry Facility since 2008 and two years ago, we have joined with Proteomics facility to create Extracellular Vesicles Unit as a core facility for the study of extracellular vesicles, that I also manage.

I think it is prioritary to continue learning from our colleagues in order to offer our users the best service. In addition, learning about others facilities in terms of managing would be a very nice form to manage our facility in the most efficient way possible.

Hi All,

I am the facility manager for the Biological Optical Microscopy Platform at the University of Melbourne. We are a large facility (>400 researchers) that covers a wide range of biological applications across multiple institutes/departments at the University. I am also the President of Light Microscopy Australia, with 250 members across Australia.

As a Scot in exile in Melbourne, I can appreciate the nice(r) weather. If anyone is wanting to escape the cold northern winter this year, then I can suggest you come to Brisbane for the Asia Pacific Microscopy Congress in February. I can guarantee that there won't be any snow (and its going to be a great congress)!!

Mrs Isabel Crespo 07 Nov 2024 - 11:36:14 AM
Hi all,
I’m Isabel Crespo, the manager of the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility at August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), in Barcelona since 2003. I was offered to start the IDIBAPS Flow Cytometry Facility up from the very beginning, running an analogical cell sorter and a very old analytical flow cytometer (from 1996!) in a very small room… nowadays we have a 128m2 facility with 5 analysers and 2 cell sorters… I really appreciate this initiative! Great to learn from the best professionals in the “core management” world.
Looking forward to diving into discussions about all the topics that core managers are involved in, education/training, fees, quality, professional career, and many other topics.

Hi everyone, and thank you for this great initiative! I am representing the imaging core facility CMIC at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. After having completed a PhD and postdoc I started in the facility business only a year ago. I am passionate about all things microscopy-related, and eager to optimize both methods and management!

Hi everyone, I am Reiner Schulte and I am running the flow cytometry facility at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR). I have been working in this facility for 12 years and we operate six cell sorter and four flow analyser. Before my time at CIMR, I worked in the flow core at the CRUK Cambridge Institute.

Mark Scott 05 Nov 2024 - 01:07:46 AM
Hi Everyone, this is a great initiative, pleased to meet you all.

I am Mark Scott, Microscopy Core Facility manager at the Translational Research Institute in Brisbane. Australia. Having worked at Newcastle University and Imperial College in the UK, I finally moved back to the sun in 2014, working in core facilities of WEHI in Melbourne and IMB at University of Queensland before moving to manager my own facility in 2019 at TRI.

We have been upgrading a number of our systems over the past few years and have the facility in a very competitive place to provide our researchers from all over Brisbane access to top end equipment. Looking forward to diving into discussions on how we all get the most out of our individual core facilities.

Holly Aaron 04 Nov 2024 - 10:31:19 PM
Hello, Lovely RMS Community -

I am Holly Aaron, Director of the Molecular Imaging Center (MIC), part of the Cancer Research Labortory at University of California, Berkeley, in the US. The MIC has all light microscopes, including confocal (spinning and scanning), lightsheet, slide scanning, and more. I got tricked into taking this job way back in 2001 and somehow I really enjoyed it. So much so that I tried to quit and just couldn't. So I look forward to learning from the world.

And if anyone can send kind wishes our way tomorrow, that would be most appreciated. Trying not to think about it, but hard to completely block it out, even when working in a dark room on beautiful glowing specimens. Le sigh.
