Oxford Brookes Centre for Bioimaging

Oxford Brookes Bioimaging Unit (OBBU) is a core facility based in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Oxford Brookes University. Our unit has a range of light and electron microscopes that are available to university staff and students as well as external researchers and users from industry. Our expertise lies in high resolution live cell imaging and 3D electron microscopy. Our pricing, access and user training details are on our website.

Expertise

Imaging Platforms

Keywords - Light Microscopy: Confocal microscopy | Widefield microscopy | Live cell imaging
Keywords - Electron Microscopy: Transmission EM | Electron tomography | Scanning EM (Tungsten) | Scanning EM (FEG) | Serial Block Face SEM | Array tomography

The Centre for Bioimaging has a range of light and electron microscopes as well as associated specimen preparation facilities. We have a Jeol 1400 Flash TEM with tomography, a Hitachi S3400 variable pressure SEM, a Zeiss Merlin Compact VP FEGSEM with Gatan 3View system and array tomography, a Zeiss LSM 880 with Airyscan, a Zeiss LSM 800 with Airyscan plus additional fluorescence and wide field light microscopes. We also have a Baltec HPM 010 high pressure freezer, two RMC PowerTomes (one with cryo and one with the automated tape collection system), a Leica AFS2 freeze sub system and all systems associated with routine and high pressure frozen sample preparation for LM, TEM and SEM. We have Digital Micrograph, Amira, IMOD and Imaris software licences in our image analysis suite for data processing. We primarily focus on biological samples but our unit can also accommodate some material science applications.

Applications

Keywords - Biological: CELL BIOLOGY | PARASITE BIOLOGY | DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY | PLANT BIOLOGY | DROSOPHILIA | BIO-MATERIALS
Keywords - Physical Sciences: Bioengineering & biomaterials | Nanomaterials

Our staff have experience in preparing and imaging a wide range of biological samples at different resolution levels. Our current interests are in the development of microscopy techniques, cell and tissue biology, plants, parasites and medical research but we are happy to discuss projects outside of these areas.

Sample Preparation

Keywords - Biological: RESIN EMBEDDING | ULTRATHIN SECTIONING | SERIAL SECTIONING | IMMUNOLABELLING |  LIVE CELL IMAGING | HIGH PRESSURE FREEZING | FREEZE SUBSTITUTION | CRITICAL POINT DRYING | METAL COATING | NEGATIVE STAIN | CORRELATIVE LIGHT & EM | IMMUNOFLUORESCENCE | CRYOSECTIONING | CRYOSTAT SECTIONING

We have a wide range of experience in all aspects of biological sample preparation. sample preparation will need to be optimised for each sample type and it is best to get in contact with us to discuss your research questions.

Data Analysis

Keywords - Software: ImageJ | Imaris | Amira | IMOD | Digital Micrograph/GMS

We have a range of software and high capacity computers to process data for analysis.

Shared Access

We allow paid access to academics from different institutions and we also train commercial users to come and use our facilities. Please contact us for prices and availability.
