University of Sheffield Medical School Micro-CT Facility

Based in the University of Sheffield Medical School, we provide access, training, assistance and advice for the micro-CT facility for staff and students of the university. Access for external researchers and industrial research is also welcome - please contact for further information.

Expertise

Imaging Platforms

Keywords - X Ray microscopy : MicroCT

Skyscan 1272 desktop high-resolution micro-CT scanner:
- More than 200 Megapixel (14450 x 14450 pixels) in every virtual slice through objects
- More than 2600 such slices can be reconstructed after a single scan
- Due to phase-contrast enhancement, object details down to 0.4um can be detected
- Maximum scanning diameter - 75mm, integrated micropositioning stage
- 2D/3D image analysis, surface and volume rendering

Applications

Keywords - Biological: Cell Biology | Developmental Biology | Histology/Pathology | Zebrafish | Drosophila | Bio-materials | Bone | Teeth
Keywords - Physical Sciences: Bioengineering & Biomaterials | Geology/Mineralogy | Composites | Polymers & Organic Electronics

The micro-CT facility is commonly used to scan, analyse and create 3-D models of:
- bone and teeth
- medical implants, such as stents
- tissue engineering samples, such as scaffolds
- pharmacology, such as tablets
- geology samples, such as soil
- printing, such as 3-D model creating for 3-D printing

Common parameters of analysis are structure volume, thickness, number, separation, connectivity, density and porosity.

Samples can also be modelled in 3-D, and images and movies created.

Sample Preparation

Samples can be scanned wet or dry, fixed or fresh

Data Analysis

Keywords - Software: ImageJ | Skyscan CTAnalysis | Skyscan CTVox | Drishti 3-D Modelling

We have two workstations dedicated to sample analysis and one workstation dedicated to volume rendering and 3-D modelling.

Shared Access

Available to Sheffield University staff and students. Access to other academic or industrial researchers by arrangement.

Funding

The facility is maintained from user access charges. The Scanner and computers were funded through Bloodwise, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Sheffield Hospitals Charity.
