Scientific Organisers: Derek Davies & Rachael Walker
This event consisted of both plenary talks from invited speakers and parallel sessions with selected talks, alongside several commercial workshops, a large exhibition and the opportunity to network with flow and image cytometrists from all over Europe and beyond. The conference highlighted advances in flow and image instrumentation, high content screening, cancer and stem cell biology, applications of clinical cytometry and the development of novel probes and approaches in many areas of biomedical research.

The Francis Crick Institute
Derek is the Science Technology Platform (STP) Training lead at the Francis Crick Institute in London. For many years prior to this he ran the flow cytometry core facility at the Crick (and its founder Institutes). His role now involves delivering high-quality education and training in flow cytometry and other technologies to end-users both at the Crick and outside. He co-organises the section’s annual flow cytometry course at the University of York and is active in promotion of cytometry via focussed meetings and other courses. He is one of the principal organisers of flowcytometryUK meetings. Derek is particularly keen to promote cytometry education within the UK and beyond.
Dr Rachael Walker
Rachael is the Head of Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Babraham Institute, Cambridge. The core provides a service to Babraham Institute and biotech companies that are housed on the Babraham Research Campus. She is also very involved with the flow cytometry community, on a local, national and International level. Rachael is one of the principle organisers of the flowcytometryUK biennial meeting and also the Advances in Cytometry meeting.
Rachael has been awarded an ‘Emerging Leader ‘ scholarship from the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC).
Prof Doreen Cantrell
University of Dundee
Professor Doreen Cantrell is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee. Her research interests are focused on T lymphocyte development and activation, a key process to the comprehension and manipulation of mammalian immune responses. She has published over 180 research papers and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and EMBO in 2000, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2005 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2011. She was awarded Commander of the British Empire in the 2014 New Year Honours for her services to the UK Science.

Dr Garry Nolan
Dr. Nolan is the Rachford and Carlota A. Harris Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He trained with Leonard Herzenberg (for his Ph.D.) and Nobelist Dr. David Baltimore (for postdoctoral work for the first cloning/characterization of NF-?B p65/ RelA and the development of rapid retroviral production systems). He has published over 220 research articles and is the holder of 20 US patents, and has been honored as one of the top 25 inventors at Stanford University.
Dr Steve Rees
In March 2017 Steve was appointed as Vice-President of the Discovery Biology department at AstraZeneca with global accountability for protein and cellular reagent generation and assay development, functional genomics and chemical biology. Prior to this Steve led the Screening Sciences and Sample Management department and successfully implemented strategies for hit identification, compound profiling, sample management and open innovation. Steve has led multiple international collaborations and has authored >65 scientific papers. Steve is currently Chair of the European Laboratory Research and Innovation group (ELRIG), has served as Chair of the SLAS Europe Council, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Axol Biosciences, LifeArc and the Centre for Membrane Protein and Receptor research at the Universities of Nottingham and Birmingham.
The meeting is scheduled to begin on Wednesday 18 July at 13:00, with a light lunch and access to the exhibition from 12:00.
