Centre for Biophotonics
The Centre for Biophotonics based at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, Glasgow provides an imaging facility that comprises a range of commercial and home-built instruments for advanced optical microscopy. We can provide practical help and advice in all aspects of imaging to internal and external partners.
Keywords - Light Microscopy: Confocal microscopy | Widefield microscopy | Live cell imaging
Brightfield/transmission optical microscopy
Differential interference contrast microscopy
Phase contrast microscopy
Wide-field epi-fluorescence microscopy with time-lapse
Confocal laser scanning microscopy with excitation wavelengths from 405-633nm
Image analysis software including Volocity, Photoshop, Metamorph and ImageJ
Keywords – Biological: Cell Biology | Neurobiology |Developmental Biology | Immunobiology | Plant Biology | Zebrafish | C.elegans | Drosophila | Microbiology | Bio-materials | Histology/pathology
Keywords - Physical Sciences: Bioengineering and biomaterials | Semiconductors and optoelectronics | Nanomaterials (nanoparticles, 2D nanomaterials, nanowires and nanotubes) | Optical and photonic materials and devices | Magnetics, magnetic materials and spintronics
The majority of our imaging is of biological tissue or cells from both our internal researchers and our industrial collaborators, for example wide-field fluorescence time-lapse imaging over several hours of the changes in movement of dendritic cells after exposure to Leishmania parasites. We also support researchers from the chemical and physical sciences, including materials analysis, for example semiconductor device imaging and reflectance measurements of focus ion beam milled optical surfaces. We have also assisted several local artists with various optical imaging projects.
Keywords – Biological: Immunolabelling | Immunofluorescence | H&E staining | Live Cell
Samples should be prepared in advance of booking the facility microscopes, however we can offer advice and assistance to researchers in how best to prepare samples for imaging.
Keywords - Software: ImageJ | Matlab | Volocity |Metamorph | Photoshop | Winfluor
We can provide advice and training on image analysis software including Volocity, Photoshop, Metamorph and ImageJ.
The facility is available to be booked by any academic or industrial researchers. A small charge is associated with the use of facility equipment.
